Turn Your PC to Karaoke Player with Windows Karaoke

Want to have some fun with U-Sing-Along karaoke? you don't need to buy a fancy karaoke machine which, most likely, will disappoint you by the low audio quality but high... limitations.

I've seen many pricey karaoke machines out there that play thousands of songs, all from one single DVD disc. But the video scenes are boring since they're shared within the song tracks. The Midi audio quality from these players is not what you want (that's why such many songs can be stored in one single disc). And... it's impossible to manage the list of song tracks on the disc, for example, when you want to add your favorite songs or remove ones that you dislike.
This Windows Karaoke is a free software for non-commercial uses, so help yourself and enjoy. Feel free to send me comments/suggestions, as well as any questions you may have. Thanks to TheComputerTricks.com for their sponsorship.
With Windows Karaoke, you can turn your desktop or laptop to a karaoke machine, or even connect it to your home theater system. I suggest that you connect your laptop/desktop audio (line-out) to a mixer, which allows you to plug in a microphone. Then feed the audio from this mixer to your home theater system.
You can also use this player to play other media types such as MP3, movies, etc...
Download a copy of Windows Karaoke here.

FAQ's
  1. Q: What types of files does Windows Karaoke play?
A: Windows Karaoke uses the Windows Media Player on your computer to play the video/audio, so it plays most of the video/audio file types such as AVI, MPG, MP3, WAV, etc..
  2. Q: Where can I buy Windows Karaoke?
A: Windows Karaoke is free, you can download a copy here.
Windows Karaoke is sponsored by TheComputerTricks.com, you can provide support by clicking on any ad on the site. Your support is greatly appreciated.
  3. Q: Where can I get the karaoke song tracks?
A: There are many sources that you can get karaoke song tracks. You can either download them from the internet, or extract them from DVD/VCD discs.
There are some software you can use to extract those tracks from a DVD to individual *.avi or *.mpg files. I personally use Handbrake.
With many VCD karaoke discs, you can simply copy those *.DAT files from the disc and rename them to *.mpg.
If you extract the tracks from a DVD, video codecs DivX or XviD could help reduce the size of your video files.
  4. Q: Can I use a remote control?
A: Sure you can. You can use any USB remote and map the buttons to the keyboard keys. Some Media Center Edition (MCE) remotes are available on ebay.
You might need a keymap utility to map the remote buttons to keyboard keys. Some of them are also free.
Check out "LM Remote Keymap", "Intelliremote", "HIP" (Human Interface Programmer)
  5. Q: Can I use this on my home theater?
A: Feed the audio from your desktop/laptop to your home theater, then you're good to go. You'll need a cable that goes from your PC line-out (or headset) to the RCA plugs on your receiver/mixer

Rip a Video DVD Using DVD Decrypter

Although there are many different ways to copy (or "rip") the contents of a DVD Video disc into a computer hard drive, using DVD Decrypter is still the most simple method in many cases. In fact, many people still consider DVD Decrypter as one of the best tools for DVD ripping.
Note that DVD Decrypter is a (discontinued) freeware, so you can download your own copy from one of the links below. Many prefer to switch to a newer software, calledDVDFab, which is very similar to DVD Decrypter adding some additional features; however, if you just want a simple (and free) method to rip your DVD video, try DVD Decrypter first. In most cases, DVD Decrypter still does a good job.
DVD Decrypter Download:
Mirror 1: DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0 (Final)
Mirror 2: DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0 (Final)

  1. First, Download and install DVD Decrypter if you haven't done so.
  2. Insert the DVD Video disc into your drive and launch DVD Decrypter. (Make sure your disc is clean!)
  3. As DVD Decrypter is starting up, it will scan the disc and display its main window similar to this image:

    - On the first screen, the left-half displays the information about the disc such as, the region settings and the Copyright protection together with the default destination folder (where the disc contents will be copied to), and the "execute" button.
    - The right-haft of this same screen displays the file contents of the disc. By default, all files are selected (highlighted) (You want to rip everything from the disc to retain its structure).
    - The bottom screen ("DVD Decrypter Log") shows the informational messages.
  4. If you wish to change the destination folder, click on the yellow folder icon under "Destination", then navigate to the folder you prefer.
  5. Click on "Mode" from the top menu, then select the mode you prefer. For the ripping purpose, the two options are:
    - "File" : Rip the DVD contents as files.
    - "ISO/Read": Rip the DVD to hard drive as an ISO image.

  6. Once you're happy with all the settings, click on the button  to start ripping the disc.
Notes:
- If you're having a bad disc, you might end up seeing some read-errors during the process. To adjust the settings for reading errors to the way you like, go to: "Tools" > "Settings" > "I/O", and change the Read Errors settings under Options
- DVD Decrypter copies the DVD disc to computer hard drive "as is", without any compression. If the source disc is larger than 4.37 GB, you might need some extra steps to compress the DVD contents to fit a recordable DVD disc. See related articles below (using DVD Shrink) for details.

Command Prompt on Right-Click

Many computer users, specially the programmers, need to launch a command prompt window every once in a while to execute some dos/shell commands. The problem is, when a command prompt window launched, the default path is normally the system path or the user profile's path. The users will then have to do all the "cd" commands to change the directories to the path he/she wants.
This trick shows you how to add an option called "Command Prompt" when you right-click on a folder in Windows. With this option, a Command Prompt Window will launch and its current directory will be the path to the folder you've selected.
Use this trick at your own risk.
Here's what you'll get:

The Solution
You can either edit your registry OR download the registry file and apply it on your computer.

  6. Right-click on this new key "Command Prompt" and select New > Key
  7. Change the name of this key to "command"
  8. Here's what we should have:
  9. Double-click on the "(Default)" text on the right window to bring up the edit box
  10. Enter this text into the Value Data field:
    cmd.exe "%1"
  11. Click OK and close the registry.

How To Transfer Digital Photographs to the Computer with Wi-Fi

There are many conveniences that advancements in technology bring. Today, you can actually upload your photographs directly from your digital camera to your computer using only your Wi-Fi connection. This means that you no longer have to plug in your camera to your computer, and that you no longer have to take out the memory card and insert it into your computer. Here’s how.
  • Lexar SD card. First of all, you will need to purchase a Lexar Shoot and Sync SD card. Most digital cameras have SD cards as storage devices. The Lexar Shoot and Sync SD card has only 2 megabytes of storage in it, but it has the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network. This way, you do not need actual memory in your photographs, because all the photos that you take will automatically be transferred to your computer.
  • Set up. Once you have purchased the SD card, you will need to set it up. Start by taking the card and then inserting it into your digital camera. After you have placed the card, you will need to take the installation CD that comes with the SD card, and insert the CD into your computer. An installation wizard will automatically pop up and prompt you to install the software for the SD card into your computer. Simply follow the instructions on the screen to install the software.

    • Network and computer.
After installation, you will need to specify which Wi-Fi network you want your digital camera to sync to. After you have specified the network, you will need to specify which computer in the network you want your digital camera to sync to.
    • Photo services. Afterwards, you will need to determine which photo services you want your digital camera to automatically sync to. Most people today use various photo services for photo storage and photo display. Some people, for instance, make use of Facebook, Flickr, and many others to store and showcase their photographs. If you use these programs, you can easily choose the photo services that you use so that the pictures that you take will automatically be sent to these photo services. Naturally, you need to make sure that you are connected to the Internet so that this will work.
    • Plug the card. Now, all you need to do is to take the actual SD card from Lexar and then insert it into the slot in your digital camera. Turn on your digital camera, and the SD card will automatically detect the Wi-Fi network. Make sure that you are within the range of the Wi-Fi network.
    • Take photos. Now that you have set up the computer and your camera, it’s time for you to start taking photos. Simply take shots as usual. The shots will automatically be sent to your computer. In essence, your entire computer is your storage device, which means that you can take as many photos as you want.

With these steps in mind, you should be able to easily transfer photos from your digital camera to your computer using a Wi-Fi network.

How To Use a Nikon N90 Camera

The Nikon N90 camera is an old-timer in the field of photography, however many people still use it for its reliable features. This camera makes use of film instead of a memory card. To use this, you must be familiar with how to handle a camera that uses film to store images.
  • Install the batteries. Unlock the battery holder then remove it from the battery chamber. Place four AA batteries into the battery holder, with the batteries’ positive and negative terminals at the appropriate places. Put it back in the battery chamber. Lock it into place.
  • Place the film. Open the locks at the back of the camera to access the film compartment. Slide the film cartridge into the film slot while pulling on one edge of the film until it reaches the red mark on the camera. Align the filmsprockets with the spokes, making sure that the film is pulled tightly. Close the cover.
  • Adjust the aperture. The aperture is the lens opening that lets light in the camera. This affects how bright or dim a picture appears. The smaller the aperture number is, the larger the opening and the more light comes in. A large aperture is good for shallow depth of fields and blurred backgrounds. A narrow aperture is good for high depth of fields and clear backgrounds. Twist the lens ring according to your preferences.
  • Set the focus. Pressing the shutter release button halfway down starts the autofocus function, which makes the camera focus on the subject in front of the camera. To change the area of focus, press the focus button and turn the dial on the camera’s top.

    • Adjust the light meter. Halfway pressing the shutter release button activates the light meter. Check the viewfinder and see whether there is a + or – symbol. A (+) symbol means that the film is overexposed, meaning there’s too much brightness in the image. To correct this, decrease the aperture or increase the shutter speed. A (–) symbol means that the film is underexposed, creating a dim image. Increase the aperture and slow down the shutter speed to enable light to enter the camera more freely.
    • Select a vari-program. These are built-in programs that help you take a better picture. Choose among portrait, red-eye reduction, hyperfocal, close-up, silhouette, sport, and landscape programs.
    • Take the picture. Completely pressing the shutter release button captures the image. Check the LCD screen to find out how many pictures you can still take. The frames left depends on the type of film you use.
    • Rewind the film. When the film has run out, a rewinding symbol blinks and a sound alerts you to rewind the film. Rewinding the film protects the film from exposure to light when the camera is opened. Press the rewind button. Don’t open the camera while the film is rewinding. Wait until the film symbol appears and the frame counter displays E for empty. This means that the rewinding is done and it’s safe to take the film cartridge out the camera.

Choose a film that’s compatible with your Nikon N90 camera. Take care of the film and see to it that it doesn’t get pulled out accidentally. Keep your films in a safe place to preserve your photos.

How To Take Good Portraits with a Digital Camera

Digital cameras are quite affordable nowadays, compared to cameras just a couple of years ago. Today, you can get a ten-megapixel camera with up to four gigabytes of storage and plenty of features for just a couple of hundred of dollars. No matter how high-tech your digital camera is, however, you will still need to know great strategies to ensure that you capture the best images. After all, producing great photos doesn’t necessarily require cameras with hefty price tags: it just takes skill, a speedy reaction time, and knowing how to capture the right moment.
  • Prepare your camera. First of all, you need to know all of the tricks that you can do with your camera. Even point-and-click cameras today are quite sophisticated. There are various modes and picture editing capabilities in most new cameras today, and you should know how to use each of them. This way, you will be able to make the most out of your camera, and get the great shots that you have always wanted. Also make sure that you have recently charged your camera, and that it has enough memory space.

    • Opt for natural lighting.
The best type of lighting for portraits is natural light. If you want natural light, try shooting outdoors, during the late afternoon. The sunlight when the sky is about to change from day to night is particularly conducive for charming portraits that have a lot of character to it. Keep in mind, however, that this ideal natural light will only last for a couple of minutes, so you need to act fast. If it gets too dark, try adding more light with halogen lamps. If it is still too bright, try to shoot indoors.
    • Choose a good background. The background is another factor that usually distinguishes amateur shots from professional ones. The best backgrounds are those that are simple and unobtrusive, so that the subject’s face is highlighted. If you have a large piece of cloth, you can hang this and then use it as a background. Get a lamp with a soft light and let the light highlight the center of the cloth, so that you will end up with a glowing middle; this will highlight the face of your subject even more. Nature backgrounds are also perfect for portrait shots.
    • Use optical zoom instead of digital zoom. Use the optical zoom feature of your camera instead of the digital zoom. That’s because digital zoom results in pixilated images. Choose optical zoom if you really want to highlight a particular feature of your subject. Once your optical zoom feature has reached its maximum, simply scoot over to the subject. Also try using a tripod when you zoom onto your subject, to avoid blurred images due to shaky hands.

Be sure to take as many shots as necessary. There is no need to scrimp on memory space, since you can easily transfer the images to your computer and then delete the photos that you don’t like. Remember, even fashion magazines take hundreds upon hundreds of shots before ending up with a shot that they like. With these in mind, you should be able to end up with a great portrait that you have taken using only your digital camera.
